The property
Founded in 1968 following the merger of 5 companies, Castellare di Castellina is one of the best references for Tuscan wines . Renowned for their quality, the estate's wines derive their uniqueness from both their exceptional terroir and their label, whose bird represents the estate's deep respect for the surrounding nature.
The vineyard
Located in the heart of Chianti, the vineyard extends for 80 hectares near the small village of Castellina. On the heights of a natural amphitheater, this terroir, planted on clay-limestone soils, produces full-bodied, powerful wines with great aging potential.
The vintage
The 2018 vintage was characterized by early budding, favored by the mild climate of March and April, followed by a rainy and cool May. A mild summer gave way to a month of September where the sun and the thermal breadth between day and night were the ideal conditions to guarantee perfect phenolic maturity combined with a beautiful aromatic intensity.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes are harvested by hand in the first week of October and are rigorously selected before destemming. The alcoholic fermentation is carried out plot by plot in steel vats. Maceration for 20 days before racking and malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for 30 months in barrels (2/3 of which are new). Bottling is followed by another 10 months of maturation before being marketed.
Alcohol content: 13%
Pairing: I Sodi di S. Niccolò 2018 from Castellare di Castellina pairs perfectly with Chianina steak and aged pecorino.
